Urban political ecology in prospect and retrospect

The contemporary theorization of the urban biosphere has reached something of an impasse between the perceived limitations of urban political ecology, the neo-Lefebvrian emphasis on planetary urbanization, and the rise of “new materialisms”. Similarly, the proliferation of various multidisciplinary approaches to urban ecology, based on a combination of methodologies derived from the physical and social sciences, has yet to produce a coherent degree of conceptual or epistemological integration. Leading urban ecologists have called for a “new ecological paradigm” that directly incorporates the “human dimension” into ecological processes. Running through these reformulations, however, is a continuing uncertainty about the analytical scope of contemporary ecology in relation to the specific cultural, historical, and material dimensions of urbanization.
